“The llama, a native camelid of the Americas, touched all aspects of Andean life. The llama- the only native American beast of burden-was used primarily to transport goods from the coastal deserts to the highest mountain plains. Well adapted to the extremes of the Andean environment, including climate, terrain, and altitude, the llama was at the heart of every Andean home. The llama and its camelid cousins (alpaca, guanaco, and vicuña) provided the all-important hairs that were spun into fibers to weave warm garments of considerable strength and durability. Such clothing was crucial for survival during cold Andean nights and in the altiplano highlands. Llamas also provided body heat for shepherds and other laborers who could not return to a warm home every night. Llama blood was an important ritual offering, and its meat was occasionally consumed for protein, although the high value of the living animal made these latter uses infrequent and of special significance.

During the Late Intermediate Period, the Chancay Valley and adjacent Chillón Drainage developed an energetic corporate style of architecture and art. Large amounts of ceramics were produced and distributed among the ruling elite as well as those of lesser status. Among these are the distinctive mold-made and hand-modeled sculptures of humans (both men and women) and animals.”

Types of crafty hobbies I think the vamps would have

Lestat: knitting. He knits like full blankets and uses them as gifts for people. Like he learned from some random old women in the French alps as a kid and then got back into it during his time in NOLA, def knits on the tour bus. Makes his band mates fingerless gloves and scarves with their band logo on them.

Louis: cross stitch, his sister and mother did it and when he was a kid he learned from his mother so he would have something to keep his hands busy. Stopped as he got older and now he does it as a form of relaxation in his rock garden. Also learned embroidery, just cause it came up in a cross stitch tutorial he was watching and he just liked it.

Claudia: when she was a little girl she would sew and make little doll clothes. A women in the boarding house taught her to hand sew. When she’s with Madeline in Belgium, she takes up tatting, aka a style of lace making, and makes the lace details for dresses Madeline makes. She was making a lace choker for Madeline before going to visit Louis

Madeline: knitting but also jewelry making, like wire wrapping, and finding little pieces to repurpose. She was in the process of making Claudia a ring and necklace to purpose with before going to visit Louis.

Daniel: weirdly got really into like model building, before the shakes from Parkinson’s made it hard to do smaller parts of the models. Moved onto puzzles and also, finds gardening relaxing. Has a small herb garden in his house. He named it Berniece. Don’t ask me why.

Armand: crochet. And weaving. He does crochet while laying in bed has so much yarn he orders off Amazon and random yarn shops. He started looking into dying his own yarn but was stuck on if he wanted alpaca or if he should start with acrylic before going big game with expensive yarns. Weaving, he started and realized he remembered somethings because he has flashes of memory of who he thinks was his mother weaving something in Delhi.

Inca Textiles

For the Incas finely worked and highly decorative textiles came to symbolize both wealth and status, fine cloth could be used as both a tax and currency, and the very best textiles became amongst the most prized of all possessions, even more precious than gold or silver. Inca weavers were technically the most accomplished the Americas had ever seen and, with up to 120 wefts per centimetre, the best fabrics were considered the most precious gifts of all. As a result, when the Spanish arrived in the early 16th century CE, it was textiles and not metal goods which were given in welcome to these visitors from another world.

Although very few examples of Inca textiles survive from the heartland of the empire, and we also know that many textiles were burnt to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Spanish, we do have, thanks to the dryness of the Andean environment, many textile examples from the highlands and mountain burial sites. In addition, Spanish chroniclers often made drawings of textile designs and clothing so that we have a reasonable picture of the varieties in use.

Weavers

It seems that both men and women created textiles, but it was a skill women of all classes were expected to be accomplished at. The principal equipment was the backstrap loom for smaller pieces and either the horizontal single-heddle loom or vertical loom with four poles for larger pieces, such as rugs and blankets. Spinning was done with a drop spindle, typically in ceramic or wood. Inca textiles were made using cotton (especially on the coast and in the eastern lowlands) or llama, alpaca, and vicuña wool (more common in the highlands) which can be exceptionally fine. Goods made using the super-soft vicuña wool were restricted and only the Inca ruler could own vicuña herds. Rougher textiles were also made using maguey fibres.

The finest female weavers (aclla) from across the empire were forcibly relocated to the capital Cuzco to work in the Acllawasi or 'House of the Chosen Women'. Here, too, state sponsored workshops with subsidised workers produced clothing for the nobility and the army. It was here that the finest cloth was made by male specialists known as qumpicamayocs or 'keepers of the fine cloth'. The Incas had three categories of cloth: the roughest was chusi (used primarily for blankets); slightly less coarse and most common was awasca for daily use and the military but which was rarely decorative; and the finest cloth was qompi. The latter was divided into a further two categories - one grade for tribute, the other for royal and religious function. Many burials contained not only textiles but also oblong work-baskets which contained the tools necessary for weaving (spindles, bobbins, spools of thread, and metal pins and needles), indicating that weaving was a highly esteemed craft.

I was thinking along the palette of the Hadorian heraldic device, + maybe black bc mourning (although what constitutes mourning-wear in Beleriand is another can of worms I suppose lol), but maybe she would want to incorporate Beorian colors/something else entirely? Sorry for the ramble!

For Hadorian clothing, I imagine they use wool, imported flax, occasional imported cotton, and leather. Their communities are agricultural based and men and women often wear smock like outfits on most working days. Noblewomen and those with more resources wear more cotton and dresses and skirts are common.

Dyes are mostly plant based and done by individual families with the exception of more expensive or elaborate pieces that will be made by artisans. Yellow and light green are common colors because they can be easily produced from dyers woad which grows abundantly in Hithlum. Blue can also be produced from woad though the process is somewhat more difficult and so is rarer in Hadorian dress.

General sewing and fabric work is done by both men and women while embroidery and decorative sewing is more gendered.

Flower patterns are a common Hadorian motif on clothes and architecture and purely abstract patterns are rare on clothes. You will often see mostly plain clothing but with designs of patterns around the hem, collars and for those with more time and resources, along the seam going down the side.

The Bëorians used more wool from alpaca and sheep as well as imported flax and occasionally nettles.

Color is very important in ceremonial clothing and dyeing is a significant trade among the Bëorians

Red madder root, woad, dyer’s croton, common marigold, dayflower, yellow chamomile and black mulberry are among some plants valued for dyes. Earthen and stone pigments are also used.

Red madder dyes are of particular significance to the Bëorians. The deep red color is used to dye sashes and headwear that is traditionally worn during formal occasions.

As the climate of Hithlum is different from Ladros, red madder could no longer be used after the Bragollach among Bëorian refugees. The deep red it yields is also considerably less common among Hadorian clothing and customs.

Many Bëorians in Hithlum had to relearn trades they had been doing their entire lives because of the differences in materials, processes and customs. As most had come with nothing, their clothing and possessions having been destroyed during the sudden flame, this was extremely disheartening and yet another aspect of the devastating losses of culture and customs.

I agree that Morwen would make point to wear Bëorian colors. The colors Morwen wears depends on when in her life. In Hithlum, in addition to Bëorians colors, I headcanon she often wore muted colors, and earthen ones, even before Húrin's loss.

I do think she would wear the Hadorian colors on some ceremonial occasions. She has a strong sense of honor and duty and although I think she is fiercely loyal to the customs and culture she grew up in, she is also loyal to Húrin.

Abstract patterns, some with cultural meeting, some without, are much more common in Bëorian clothing than in Hadorian ones. Geographic patterns are some of the most common and storytelling through these is a practice. Some of these patterns are carried over by refugees but many are lost.

I specifically headcanon that Morwen refused to use Hadorian customs whenever possible. The clothing she made, especially before her marriage, used Bëorian design and custom to the extent that it could.

I have the headcanon that Bëorian women who are married wear specific braids to designate marriage. In the event of widowhood, one of the braids is cut, the other kept. I go back and forth on if Morwen cut one of her braids, as she did believe Húrin to be alive. I think other aspects of mourning she was not able to engage in due to lack of resources during the occupation.

I thrift a lot of natural fiber for use and for unraveling/reuse. My general rule of thumb is up to 20% synthetic is ok. Preferably nylon. Nylon increases abrasion resistance and strength, and is common to see in the 10-20% range in boutique sock yarn for that reason.

The quality of natural fiber in clothing is declining with the overall decline in clothing quality (last 20 years in particular). I find the good shit mostly in the men's section too -- remember that men's clothing tends to use better quality fabric and be finished better than comparable women's items, even in the same brand and style. The poor finishing on women's clothes means that you're getting scratched and poked unnecessarily by raw seams and embellishments. The cheaper fabric may be less comfortable, thinner, and less durable.

Wool comfort is dependent on things like quality of the fiber, how it's spun, how it's woven or knitted, etc. More twist is more durable but less drapey. Shorter staple (individual hair length) means more ends and potentially a scratchier surface. Fineness of fiber also varies a ton between sheep of the same breed, and also during an individual sheep's life.

Rayon (aka bamboo or viscose) is a grey area fiber. It's a cellulose fiber, made from plants, but the process is chemical dependent and not eco friendly. It's still a huge upgrade over polyester imo.

The weird thing about linen is that it loves abuse and gets softer with wear. Expect a break-in period from brand new linen.

Very similar to linen (and one I see blended with cotton a lot) is ramie. Also natural.

Silk is great. Like wool, comfort factor depends some on quality of fiber and how it's spun or woven.

Cashmere, mohair, alpaca, camel, angora are all natural. Like wool can range from scratchy to next-to-skin soft. Faux- or vegan- any of the above is just plastic.

Idk exactly how to explain this but the softness of real wool and real linen is very different from the artificial softness of polyester “sherpa”, fuzzy faux-fur, spongey acrylic knits and people have gotten too used to the soft plastics and now associate wool with “itchy” and linen with rough and cotton with “too heavy” and then go and wear 100% polyester fleecy sweatshirts and say it’s so warm and cozy but actually they’re just staticky cooking in their sweat locked inside a plastic membrane and you are paying too much to be wearing filaments of petroleum products and the money isn’t going to the people sewing them either. I’m saying you all need to touch grass and the grass in this situation is good quality textiles made of natural fibres.

Lincolnshire Witches

(This post is based on folklorist Ethel Rudkin's article "Lincolnshire, Folklore, Witches and Devils", published in 1934 in Folklore, volume 45, number 3, pp.249-267. I'm making it both because it's cool and because I have followers - won't name them for obvious reasons - who live in Lincolnshire and want to know more about the county's folklore.)

How To Become a Lincolnshire Witch: Touch your toes and say "all that I 'ave a-tween me fingertips and me toes I give to thee [the Devil]." The contract needs to be renewed every year, which is done by walking around the church three times on St. Mark's Eve (24th April, a night often associated with dark magic in English folklore), looking through the keyhole and saying a now-lost spell - perhaps the same as the words of the initial vow?

What Powers Do Lincolnshire Witches Have?: The most common one is making humans and animals fall ill (casting St. Vitus' dance on people who slight them is pretty common, followed by shapeshifting - hares are the favourite guise of Lincolnshire witches, with white rabbits a distant second, and other animals included cats, rats and hedgehogs. Possessing the evil eye, controlling horses, passing through key-holes, telepathy, finding lost property and teleportation were also powers they were credited with.

Where Are Lincolnshire Witches?: Throughout the villages of Lincolnshire, but two locations particularly associated with them were Dorrington Church and Blyborough Top, where they had meetings by night.

What Do They Look?: Normal old women, mostly. There's no uniform for them and the clothes they wear aren't particularly "witchy"; they only one with a described outfit, Mrs. H- of Dorrington, had a black skirt and a red-fringed black shawl made of alpaca wool.

How To Defend Against A Lincolnshire Witch: Whips made of rowan wood will break their spells, rowan wreaths prevent spells from being cast, and drawing blood from a witch or carrying thatch from her roof will prevent her from hurting you. Spayed bitches (who throughout England were associated with warding off ghosts) will drive them off.

How To Kill A Lincolnshire Witch: Only shooting with a silver bullet will do.

When Were Lincolnshire Witches?: Rudkin collected her stories in the 1930s, and when they're dated it's usually to the 1880s or 1890s.

One reason I knit is to embrace the lifestyle of slow fashion and sustainability. Not only does this make my wardrobe more practical and affordable, it also helps reduce my impact on the climate and economy. Because fast fashion is promoted by social media and big brand stores, trends are recycled rapidly and clothes are created so cheaply that they aren't even worth mending or keeping once the style is left behind. While this produces business for a local economy where one shops, the jobs created only benefit big corporations and use cheap labor; women and children work tirelessly to produce these clothes only to be paid a tiny amount so the garments can be sold at the lowest price possible.

While it seems an insurmountable task to campaign for slow fashion (after all, who doesn't benefit from a little retail therapy), one could argue that every little bit makes a difference. Whether its making a garment instead of buying one from unethical production methods, supporting local yarn and fabric stores and communities, or simply researching a company's ethical standards of production before buying from them; our world benefits from each effort to make garments intentionally instead of contributing to the masses of discarded clothes that get exported around the world to be dumped in third world countries and turned into waste.

One way that knitting makes a difference in this way is how many of the best fiber companies focus on natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, alpaca, angora, cashmere, silk, and bamboo. They source these as ethically as they can, sharing lovely videos on social media on how they care for their rabbits, sheep, and alpacas. Not only are these natural fibers more biodegradable than plastic/acrylic fibers and textiles, they are often softer, last longer, and are easier to mend. While many have grown used to the synthetic feel of mass-produced clothing, some of the high-end brands still embrace the luxury of natural fibers and appreciate the mutual relationship we have with our fiber friends for providing us with coverings from their furs.

One could argue that it is a lifestyle. It may not be perfect - sometimes natural fibers can be more expensive than plastic yarns, and it takes time and patience to acquire the skills necessary to knit garments that fit just as nicely and as flattering as store-bought ones. But the inner peace from knowing that one's wardrobe is handmade with love, ethically sourced, and thoughtfully designed by talented knitwear designers around the world is something to be proud of. While buying a garment from a store should not bring one shame or guilt, especially for a special occasion or as a souvenir, embracing slow fashion, sustainability, and ethical production methods is a wonderful way to heal our world one fuzzy sweater at a time (:

I'm assuming she shears the alpacas herself. Does she have the means to bring the wool to a city to sell it? Or does a truck come past and buy up all the alpaca wool from all of the independent alpaca farms? If so, are there multiple buyers? If there is just a single buyer, this puts her in a dangerous position to be exploited, as she would have no bargaining power. Similar questions apply to the farmers growing potatoes or other Andean crops.

Transgender Views - In the dinner show, one of the dances (not the one shown above) had a man dressing in women's clothing and with ribbons to obscure his face in an attempt to pass as a woman so that her parents would not get suspicious.
